Imagine a group of young people who are barely managing to find their feet in life but are already beginning to think of life beyond themselves.
This is the story of these eight girls who have launched a project to reach less privileged individuals in the city of Lagos.
Mayowa Ogundele is the founder of ProjectDDD. She says: “More often than not, people tend to get consumed by everyday hustle and unintentionally forget that they are needed. Needed by the downtrodden. Needed by the unfortunate. Needed by those who have had it rough all their lives; those with no hope of a better tomorrow.”
ProjectDDD, which stands for Donation Drive for December, came into being in 2012, alongside a number of friends of hers and like-minded individuals.
The initiative is aimed at giving back to the less privileged in the society, through various charity projects.
Since 2012, the group has organised charity events and empowerment programmes for different orphanages and groups in various parts of Lagos, including Ikorodu, Makoko and Ajegunle.
In December 2015, the group organised its first one-day skills acquisition programme where over 50 women, comprising single mothers and widows were taught various skills aimed at making them to become self-employed.
The group, which largely depends on the generosity of friends, family and kind-hearted citizens, hopes to continue the drive and grow into a bigger charity organisation that can assist communities in tackling their challenges.
